The Watauga County Board of Commissioners met July 20 and Parks and Recreation Director Stephen Poulos told commissioners that the response to the new Community Recreation Center has been tremendous.

The Watauga Democrat reports there have been 2,694 people who have acquired memberships, and $46,995 in daily fees have been collected from non-members as of July 20.

Poulos said the center has been seeing anywhere from 175 to 400 daily visitors. Poulos said that after the first three months, he's learned a lot from those visitors, and will continue to examine schedules and continue to evolve.

Commissioners also approved the purchase of eight new Dodge Durangos for the Watauga County Sheriff's Office, and updates to each one with emergency equipment, at roughly $35,000 per vehicle. The board also approved a contract for new Axon body cameras.

The board also approved a bid for two new trucks for the maintenance department.
