Appalachian State University will move to license plate recognition technology instead of physical parking passes this year.

The Watauga Democrat reports the tech will replace access card readers, hang tag parking permits and barrier gates. The new system is hardware that scans license plates to determine if the car is permitted to park there or not.

According to the report, drivers can register multiple vehicles, but only one can be parked at a time. License plates must be visible in order to verify there is a valid permit on file.

The new system will allow parking and transportation staff access to real-time data, which will allow the university to utilize the parking resources more efficiently, ensuring that parking areas are not under- or over-utilized.
