Local emergency, fire, and law enforcement departments participated in training exercises in Watauga County recently.

Watauga Online reports two Watauga County fire departments conducted training scenarios at Trash Can Falls.

Monday night and Tuesday night Cove Creek Fire, Beaver Dam Fire, and Fall Creek Fire out of Avery County, participated in the exercises.

According to the report, crews simulated rescues by rappelling off of rock faces to the running waters below, and rigged a basket then lowered from the opposite side of the gorge for patient rescue.

According to Cove Creek Fire, it's hoped they never have to use what they've learned in a real life situation, but this type of training keeps them prepared when the unexpected happens.
