The Boone Sunrise Rotary Club has awarded Boone resident Bettie Bond with the Lifetime Community Service Award.
The Watauga Democrat reports Bond was also named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation, which is the charitable arm of Rotary International.
The Lifetime Community Service Award has only been presented twice before since 1986, and Bond is the first woman to receive the recognition.
Bond first came to Boone with her husband in 1971 to join the faculty at Appalachian State. Bond has served a number of committees and groups, including the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country, Watauga County Historical Society, was involved in the creation of the Digital Watauga archive, served with Watauga County Community Foundation and on the boards of the App State university library and the Watauga Humane Society, among others.
Bond was presented the award during the June 21 Boone Sunrise Rotary meeting.
