Banner Elk Police arrested a man after a stolen vehicle report and a brief chase.

The Avery Journal reports Michael Scott Snipes, age 40, of Banner Elk was charged after allegedly taking an unlocked car from the Scotchman Store on Highway 184 at Tynecastle.

The victim told police he went in the store and left his Toyota unlocked, then saw it being backed out of the parking lot and head toward Sugar Mountain.

An Avery Sheriff's deputy spotted the vehicle and pursued it until the suspect left the vehicle and fled on foot. The suspect was apprehended near the Tynecastle Gate and identified as Snipes.

Snipes was charged with one count each of larceny of motor vehicle, felony flee to elude, possession of a stolen automobile, and resisting a public officer.
