Beech Mountain Police Department, the Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department and the Avery County Humane Society received generous gifts last week from the estate of Reuben and Barbara Mooradian, long time Beech Mountain Residents.

High Country Press reports the Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department received $400,000 and the Beech Mountain Police Department and the Avery County Humane Society both received $300,000.

According to the report, Reuben Mooradian was retired US Army Lt Colonel and moved with his wife Barbara to Beech Mountain in 1969. Reuben was a founding member of the Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, and served as Fire Chief from 1974 -1995. Reuben also served on the town council and served as the first Mayor Pro Tem. Barbara served as Town Clerk.

According to the report, The Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department will use the gift for recruitment and retention and to benefit the volunteer members of the department.

The Avery Humane Society plans to use the funds to help house, feed and care for the animals, as well as provide low cost spay and neuter services, and help care for animals transferred from nearby shelters.

The Beech Mountain Police Department did not list any specific uses for the funds.
