WAMY Community Action recently partnered with with local grocery stores to provide Thanksgiving meals to families enrolled in the agency's programs.

The Watauga Democrat reports WAMY partnered with Ricochet Creative, Publix, Grow Watauga, Performance Foods, Food Lion, Harris Teeter and several anonymous donors to provide around 115 meals to families across Watauga Avery Mitchell and Yancey counties.

WAMY is a non-profit that has been working 56 years, serving these counties in an effort to break the cycle of poverty. According to the report, this year was a first for WAMY providing Thanksgiving meals.

Families were given frozen turkeys, frozen pumpkin pies, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing mix and potatoes.

The cost to provide the meals was about $6,000. All food items were either donated or the cost was covered by anonymous donors or gift cards.
