Damage from the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that struck in Alleghany August 9 was more extensive than originally thought.

WCNC TV Charlotte reports 525 buildings were damaged during the Sunday morning temblor.

Sixty buildings were considered to have major damage, meaning at least 40% of the structure was lost.

More than 20 aftershocks have been recorded since the main quake, the latest one was August 18, a 1.2 magnitude shock.

According to the report, the Red Cross is assisting 19 people who have lost their homes.
