The iconic Bluffs Restaurant at Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway will reopen Saturday, August 22.
The Ashe Post and Times reports the restaurant that began operations in 1949, will reopen after being closed for ten years. The restaurant will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through October 31. Outdoor dining will be available in front of the building as indoor capacity is limited due to COVID-19 precautions. Funding for the extensive repairs came from the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation fundraising efforts as well as support from he state of North Carolina, Appalachian Regional Commission, and donations from individuals and organizations. According to the report, the renovations replicate the original look and feel of the restaurant, and add a new roof, a reconstructed lunch counter, ADA-compliant restrooms, a complete kitchen equipment update, and more. Muddy Creek Enterprises will operate the restaurant under an agreement with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. The nonprofit holds a historic lease for the National Park Service facility and will be responsible for ongoing maintenance and improvements.
