During the Watauga Board of Education meeting Tuesday, AppHealthCare Director Jennifer Greene spoke about concerns over the increase in positive tests involving younger people.

Greene said that the majority of cases prior to this week have been in 18-24 year olds, with the next highest increase in 25 to 49 year olds.

“We continue to see our numbers of positive COVID cases going up,” Greene said. “While we currently have a lower impact from cases than in other areas of the state, these are the kinds of decisions which will hopefully keep our community from becoming one of those hot spots.”

With Appalachian State University continuing to prepare for the return of students to campus, the increase in cases in the younger age groups could lead to greater community spread, as more students return to town.

Greene said the university has a testing plan they are working on, and also have a plan for how to isolate and quarantine students where necessary.
