The Avery County Board of Education received an update on construction work at Avery High School during the July 14 meeting.

The Avery Journal reports that Rob Johnson of Boomerang Design told board members the expected completion date is now Spring of 2021.

According to the report, Johnson said that challenges related to soil nailing, weather, and needed infrastructure are factors in the delay.

Johnson also said that while COVID-19 related labor shortages and the availability of insulated concrete walls are also contributors to the delay, so far it has not been as detrimental to the project as predicted.

The approximately $20 million project includes updated classrooms, a new physical plant, and the demolition of some portions of the existing building.
