The North Carolina U.S. House District 11 position, which has been left vacant after Rep Mark Meadows took a job as the White House Chief of Staff, is one step closer to being filled after Tuesday's GOP runoff.

24 year old Henderson County Republican Madison Cawthorn defeated Lynda Bennett by 14,638 votes. Bennett, who was endorsed in a tweet by President Trump in June, landed 34.2% (15,806) of the vote while Cawthorn received 65.8% (30,444).

District 11 covers 16 of the state's westernmost counties as well as half of Rutherford County. Avery is located in district 11 while Caldwell, Watauga, and Ashe are in district 5.

The general election between Madison Cawthorn and Moe Davis will be November 3rd.
