Avery County Commissioners meet today to consider whether to end or extend the current State of Emergency in-place orders and whether to implement new restrictions due to COVID-19.

High Country Press reports Avery County Manager Phillip Barrier, Jr, said commissioners issued the state of emergency March 20, which remains in effect, as does the suspension of short-term rentals and 14-day self quarantine for any visitors from outside the county.

As of last week there were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Avery County, and a number of major events in the county have been canceled.

The Village of Sugar Mountain announced April 27 that it will allow for the expiration of the town’s restrictions on short-term rentals and quarantine of visitors staying overnight on May 8.
