A man who has served the Avery County School System as a teacher, a coach, a principal, a superintendent and as public relations director, is retiring.

The Avery Journal reports that after 30 years, Ken Townsend has retired from the school system effective March 1.

Townsend began as an interim PE teacher, and went on to teach at 3 Avery schools, and coached both middle school football and boys and girls JV basketball.

Townsend graduated from Appalachian State with a physical education and health certification, and completed his master’s in administration.

According to the report, Townsend has a cruise to Alaska planned, and a fishing trip out west, but expects to pursue another career.
