On January 14, 2020, the Watauga County Board of Elections met and adopted several resolutions.

According to Board of Elections Director Matt Snyder, the board approved the relocation of the precinct transfer location, from the Watauga County Courthouse to the Plemmons Student Union is located at 263 Locust Street, on the Appalachian State campus.

The resolution indicated the building has a large area for the voting enclosure, adequate parking, and is handicap accessible. The transfer precinct location is where voters who have moved from one precinct to another more than 30 days before an election, but did not notify the board of elections of the change, can go to vote.

Snyder said the move hopes to reduce the number of provisional ballots that must be handled.

The Board also approved a resolution defining buffer zones at the county polling places. Buffer zones should be 50 feet from the polling location where practicable, but no more than 50 feet, and a minimum of 25 feet.

The buffer zones at the Meat Camp Precinct at Meat Camp Fire Department and the New River 2 Precinct at Three Forks Baptist Association are both set at 25 feet. The High Country Vacation Homes (Foscoe One Stop) polling place has a buffer of 45 feet.

All others in the county are set at 50 feet.
