Newland Police Chief Byron Clawson will seek grant funding for a pair of projects recently approved by the Newland Board of Aldermen.

The Avery Journal reports Clawson wants to provide a K-9 Unit for the town’s police force. If successful, the grant would provide $24,500 to cover K-9 Officer training, equipment, modification of police vehicle and expenses associated with the program.

Clawson also will apply for a grant for a school resource officer, which would be considered a town employee. The grant involves a four-year commitment, with federal funding covering 75 percent of the total cost, with the town footing 25 percent of the cost the first year. It would be a 50/50 split in the second year, and the grant would fund 25 percent of the cost in the third year, with the town committing to the position for a at least one additional year at full cost.
