West Jefferson's Fire Department will seek a grant to replace aging equipment.

The West Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department will seek a 50/50 state grant totaling $60,000, for replacement helmets, helmet fronts and pairs of boots, wildland helmets, shirts and pants, goggles, wildland air bottles, five pagers, 10 radios and 12 viper radios.

All told, the grant would cover 183 items at just under $58,000 dollars.

The Ashe Post and Times reports Chief Eric Miller said some of the equipment should have been replaced in the past due to age, but was put off.

The grant would require a match from the town that they would be able to budget for the 2020/21 fiscal year.

Town Alderman approved the grant application.
