It’s no secret that retirement comes with plenty of expenses.

While some retirees may have paid off their mortgages or car loans, recurring expenses like property taxes, food and medical costs remain.

In a new study, SmartAsset has measured each county in the state by Social Security income, property taxes, state pensions and living expenses, to find the most affordable places to retire in North Carolina.

According to SmartAsset, Watauga County comes in as the third most affordable county to retire in the state, and Ashe County is number 5.

The number one most affordable county to retire in North Carolina is Swain County.

Five of the top ten counties are in western North Carolina, two in the Piedmont and three are in the eastern part of the state.
