A tractor-trailer crash Thursday, December 26 injured the driver and forced the closing of south bound lanes on US 421 South.
The Watauga Democrat reports Loyd Dale Brown, age 62, of Randleman, was hauling pressure-treated lumber when he lost his brakes and crashed into the runaway vehicle sand pile.
According to Highway Patrol Trooper C.M. Anderson, the truck was traveling 70 to 75 miles an hour when it hit the sand pile, and the cab broke free from the trailer.
Brown was pinned in the vehicle for about an hour and a half before crews freed him.
Both southbound lanes were closed as an AirCare helicopter landed on the highway at the Deep Gap intersection with U.S. 221, and Brown was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, reported to be broken ribs.
Brown was cited for driving at an unsafe speed.
