Banner Elk Town Council approved the rezoning of a pair of land parcels.

The Avery Journal reports the rezoning is a result of a local business owner’s interest in purchasing the second parcel and repurposing the lots to supply construction and landscaping materials for the area.

According to the report, David Jennings, who operates an excavating company, already owns one of the two lots at the corner of 194, Edgar Tufts Road and Old Turnpike Road.

Jennings requested both lots to be rezoned to commercial before he purchased the second lot.

Residents commented about the rezoning request during a public hearing December 9th, some concerned about the affect on property values, future development and traffic, while others believed the proposal would not have significant impacts.

Jennings still must go through the permitting process.
