An accident Tuesday morning on Highway 421 in Wilkes County closed the highway for a time.
The Wilkes Journal Patriot reports there were no injuries in the accident that occured around 5:45 am, but both northbound lanes were closed for about three hours after an SUV rear-ended a broken down tractor trailer truck about a mile west of the Windy Gap Road/Speedway road exit.
According to the report, Roaring River Fire Chief Dale Pierce said it was dark and foggy with light rain when the accident happened.
He said the rear axle of the tractor-trailer was broken and both sets of rear tandem wheels came off when it was hit by the SUV.
Pierce said it was remarkable that no one was injured.
