The Watauga County Commissioners have agreed to refinance the Watauga Humane Society's mortgage.

The Watauga Democrat reports that the refi of the Society's $373,355 mortgage will cut the month payments by almost half.

According to the report, the county will pay off the mortgage, and the Humane Society will make payments to the county, at an interest rate of 3% over a 10 year term.

Watauga County Manager Deron Geouque said the Humane Society's monthly payment will be approximately $4500.

Geouque, Commissioner Larry Turnbow and Finance Director Misty Watson have worked with the Humane Society for some time to work out the arrangement.

The Commissioners approved the refi unanimously.

In addition, Commissioners again decided to table the discussion of the Valle Crucis Historic District ordinance amendments. Commission Chairman John Welch said the amendments would not be added to a future agenda without being advertised first.

At the November 19 meeting, Watauga County Parks and Recreation Director Stephen Poulos was presented with the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association Fellow Award, the highest award the NCRPA bestows to leaders who demonstrate exemplary professional leadership and development.
