Over 100 community members attended a meeting to discuss moving the Valle Crucis School to a new location.

High Country Press reports the joint meeting between the Watauga County Commissioners and Watauga County Board of Education included an information session as well as an open forum for community members to add their input.

Community members were in agreement that a new school is needed in Valle Crucis, but were divided about the location of the new school.

The Hodges field located at the gateway to the Valle Crucis Historic District was where the new school was going to be built, but community members started a petition against this decision.

The creators of the petition believe that it would be better for Valle Crucis School to be re-built on the current school site.

Other community members in attendance agreed with the decision to have the school built on the Hodges property.
