The Watauga County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens about recent attempts at Medicare fraud scams.

Sheriff Len Hagaman says citizens have received phone calls from individuals claiming to be Medicare workers and in the conversation are trying to confirm participation by asking for Medicare Card Numbers.

When the clients refused the caller became rude and began demanding this number even to the point of threatening to suspend their Medicare.

Sheriff Hagaman says please be aware that this is a SCAM, and urges people to not give out your Medicare Card Number to anyone calling and asking for it.

Do not give out any other personal information that may be requested by a phone call that you receive.

If you receive such a call contact the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office at 828-264-3761.

You can also contact the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357 to report this information.
