The pilot of a small plane that crashed in Deep Gap Wednesday morning has died.

67-year-old Danny Dunn, of 3935 Hardin Road, was the only person on board the single engine aircraft that went down in the area of Hardin Road.

Watauga Sheriff's Department Major Kelly Redmon said that according to witnesses, the aircraft had taken off from a private airstrip located on Hardin Road approximately 100 yards from the crash site about 20 minutes prior to the crash.

Witnesses said the plane circled several times then went down and caught fire. Dunn crawled from the wreckage and was located some distance from the plane. Media reports indicated Dunn was alert and conscious, but had life threatening injuries.

Dunn was flown to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem but succumbed to his injuries around 9:30 Wednesday night.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
