Stream bank restoration is under way on the South Fork of the New River at the Todd Island Park in Ashe County.

The Ashe Post and Times reports the work began Monday to repair river bank erosion, install rock vanes to redirect water velocity, improve habitat for trout and hellbender salamanders, remove invasive species and replant native species in the area.

According to the report, similar projects have been done along Big Horse Creek at the Creeper Trail Park in Lansing as well as along the Boone Greenway near the Mackorell Soccer Complex.

Due to use of heavy equipment, Todd Island Park will be closed at times while the work is being done, mostly during the week.

Jessica Janc of the Blue Ridge Resource Conservation & Development Council said kayakers and tubers will be instructed to use the right side of the river around the park during construction periods.
