Summertime means black bears and cubs can be seen around the High Country and especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The National Park Service warns drivers and pedestrians to be safe around the bears.

If you're driving, watch your speed while driving the parkway so you don't hit any bears.

If a bear approaches you on the parkway, don't run, just slowly back away.

Don't corner a bear or cubs, even if they are in a tree.

And whether you're on the Parkway or elsewhere, never feed the bears.

Additionally, be very careful if you see a female bear with cubs, because you don't want to accidentally place yourself between the mother and cub.
