The Watauga and Avery Board of Commissioners have approved their county budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

In Watauga, only minor changes were made to the proposed budget.

One of the bigger changes was to award the Southern Appalachian Historical Association its full request of $22,000, which was originally planned to be reduced to $12,000.

There will be a 5 cent increase in the property tax rate in Watauga, with 3 cents of that increase to be used for the construction of the new Valle Crucis School.

In Avery, the new county budget exceeds $30 million, which is a 2 percent increase from last year.

This will be the third consecutive year that there is no tax increase in Avery County.
