With tourist season getting underway in the coming weeks, gas prices have been rising recently all across the country, and prices locally have varied by as much as 25 to 30 cents.

GasBuddy.com shows prices around Boone and Watauga County in the neighborhood of 2.73-9 a gallon. In West Jefferson and Ashe County, prices range from 2.47 to 2.50 a gallon.

Off the mountain, in Wilkesboro prices range from 2.40 to 2.48 a gallon. In Lenoir, prices are running from 2.54 to 2.65.

Despite the higher prices, Gas Buddy reports that in North Carolina, prices are actually down more than 3 cents from last week's average, down a penny from last month's average, and down more than 6 cents from last year's average.

Comparing prices across the state, Watauga is one of the highest priced areas in North Carolina, Ashe and Wilkes are among the lowest.
