The Avery County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a bid of over $17 million to proceed with construction and renovations to Avery High School.

High Country Press reports the county has committed over $20 million in funding to cover any additional costs that may come up.

According to the report, construction will likely begin as soon as the current school year ends. Construction is expected to be finished by late 2020 or early 2021.

The Board of Commissioners also approved a new community center for Avery County’s Cooperative Extension. The center will be built next to the Extension Service headquarters in Newland and is estimated to cost about $1 million.
