A man died after a deputy-involved shooting in Boone on Saturday night. 

According to Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman, deputies were dispatched to the area of 2145 Hardin Road in reference to a suspicious man going onto the property of residences and attempting to gain entry. Deputies responded and began checking the area for the suspect.

Deputy Adam Gragg encountered a man walking in the roadway, so he stepped out of his vehicle to speak with the individual, but was attacked. There was a violent struggle and Gragg shot the suspect, who was identified as 22-year-old Andrew John Mason.

Mason was initially transported to Watauga Medical Center, and was later transported to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem where he died.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. The District Attorney has also been personally notified of the incident.

Deputy Gragg has been placed on administrative leave per Watauga County Sheriff’s Office protocol.
