Local representatives Ray Russell and Josh Dobson filed a new school calendar flexibility bill.
The Watauga Democrat reports the bill seeks an automatic waiver process for Watauga, Ashe, Avery and Mitchell county public schools to hold the first day of classes at an earlier date.
According to the report, the bill was introduced because of the large number of days High Country schools miss from winter weather.
The current state law has public schools starting on the Monday closest to August 26th. If the new law passes, High Country schools could start as early as the Monday closest to August 7th.
The bill currently has the support of the Watauga and Avery Boards of Education.
