The U.S. 221 widening project in Ashe County has opened its first section of Highway since construction started four years ago.

The Ashe Post and Times reports four miles of four lane traffic is now open from the N.C. 194 junction in Baldwin to the N.C. 163 intersection in West Jefferson. The speed limit on the new highway is 55 miles per hour.

According to the report, the section was finished ahead of its March 2nd completion date for just over $21 million.

The entire 16-mile widening project is expected to be finished by the end of 2020, but it appears the project will be over its $154 million budget.
