A man died after his pickup truck rolled down an embankment on U.S. 421 in Zionville.

The Watauga Democrat reports workers with the North Carolina Department of Transportation spotted the truck on January 4th.

According to the report, once authorities arrived at the scene, 48-year-old Daniel Jhonathan Mitchell of Zionville was declared dead. It was likely that he had crashed the night before.

Mitchell was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was partially ejected from his truck.

His cause of death is pending results from the medical examiner, and the cause of the wreck is still under investigation.

Officials do know that Mitchell drove off the right side of the road and on the shoulder for several hundred feet before he drove off the embankment, hitting several trees and overturning.
