Jeff Rose has retired as West Jefferson Police Chief.

The Ashe Post and Times reports that Senior Police Officer Brad Jordan will take over as interim Chief.

According to the report, Rose retired in the middle of two lawsuits by former West Jefferson Police sergeant James Hendrix, who is currently on trial for felony obstruction of justice.

In the first lawsuit, with the Town of West Jefferson as the defendant, Hendrix alleged that text messages sent by Rose to former Ashe County Sheriff Terry Buchanan falsely accused Hendrix of stealing evidence from the West Jefferson Police Department.

In the second lawsuit, with Rose as the defendant, Hendrix claims that Rose committed libel against him in the same string of text messages.

Neither lawsuit has been resolved.
