Avery County was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to expand broadband in the county.

High Country Press reports North Carolina Wireless will provide the service.

According to the report, the grant was requested by the Avery County Chamber of Commerce to bring better broadband service to unserved and underserved areas in the county.

North Carolina Wireless identified areas of early focus to be the Jonas Ridge and Linville Falls areas.

It was determined that Fixed Wireless through North Carolina Wireless’ Light Leap Service is the most cost-effective method and will provide the most coverage in the county.
