Memorial Day Observances around the High Country.

On Monday, May 28, Avery County will hold its annual Memorial Day celebration on the Newland Town Square. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. and honors Avery County natives or residents made the ultimate sacrifice for America. The Program will include Avery High School JROTC, the Avery High School Chorus, the Avery High School Band, and keynote speaker Fifth District Representative Virginia Foxx.

Watauga County's 12th annual Memorial Day observance will be Monday at Boone Mall beginning with music at 10:30 am and the program at 11. The High Country Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and the Watauga Community Band will be joined by the Watauga High School Marine Corps JROTC and the American Legion Post 130.

In Ashe County, the 51st annual Memorial Day Service will be held Sunday, May 27, 2:30 pm. at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. the Ashe County High School JROTC, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American legion, Disabled American Veterans, 1450th Transportation Unit N.C. National Guard and the Marine Corps League will all be participating. The service is not weather permitting and will be held rain or shine, and will be moved into the Ashelawn Chapel in the event of rain.
