The Watauga County Board of Education approved changes to the dress code policy for Watauga Schools in an effort to make it more gender neutral.

The Watauga Democrat reports board student representative Kelsey Marlett gave a presentation that pointed out wording that said "sleeves shall cover the shoulders" and said that phrase targeted females.

Marlett conducted a survey at the high school and more than 84 percent of students felt the code targeted females.

Marlett along with fellow board student representative Isabella Trew met with members of the board and reviewed the code for gender bias, and recommended removal of those words.

The board unanimously approved the removal of the wording from the dress code
