US Highway 221 was closed Thursday morning due to a mudslide. The road should be reopened Friday afternoon.

North Carolina DOT District Supervisor David Poindexter told High Country Radio News that a section of the shoulder and fill slope collapsed under the roadway near the intersection of 221 and Laurel Ridge Road.

Poindexter said some underground springs have been discovered recently during construction work on 221, and with recent rains, a crack developed and the support under the roadway collapsed.

He said most of the existing roadway was still in place, but the underpinning was gone. Poindexter said crews worked to repair the collapse and repairs were partially completed late Thursday. The road is again closed Friday from 8:30am till around 12 noon between Paul Goodman Road and Watertank Road for additional work.

Detours include Highway 194 and Highway 163 and Idlewild Road.
