The Avery County Commissioners last week approved a plan for renovations proposed by the Avery Board of Education by a vote of 4 to 1.

The Avery Journal reports the plan has an estimated cost of $19.1 million dollars.

While that amount is not locked in, the motion says the total amount cannot exceed $19.5 million.

According to the report, the renovations include improved safety upgrades, science classes that meet state safety standards and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The approval comes after joint meetings with the Commissioners and Board of Education, as well as a tour of school facilities by the Commissioners.

The vote means the project can now move into the bidding phase in 2019.
