SmartAsset has released a list of the most affordable places in North Carolina for retirees who depend on Social Security.

In its fourth annual study, SmartAsset analyzed Social Security income, cost of living data, and taxes across all counties to determine where people are getting the most mileage out of Social Security, and Watauga County ranked among the top spots in North Carolina.

According to the data, Watauga County came in at number 8 in the state. Watauga's cost of living is listed at $18,828 dollars and the annual social security amount is listed at $19,178 dollars.

The data shows Ashe County at number 10 on the list, with a cost of living listed at $17,832, and annual social security at $18,106.

Avery County is ranked at 14th most affordable in the state, with a cost of living at $18,744 and annual Social Security at $18,442.

The most affordable county in North Carolina for those relying mainly on social security is Transylvania County.
