A shooting incident last week in Ashe County has been determined to have been self defense.

The Ashe Post and Times reports that the incident happened last Friday evening, just before 7pm, in Lansing.

Deputies responded to a report of multiple shots fired on Parker Eller Road, and found one person injured. According to the report, the victim - David Carpenter - was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to the head.

The report indicates Ashe County Detective Will Hicks said Richard Weaver, Carpenter's neighbor, was the shooter in the incident. Hicks said that the investigation and the district attorney’s office have determined this was a self defense issue, saying that Carpenter approached Weaver in a threatening manner and that Weaver felt threatened and responded accordingly.

According to the report, Hicks described the incident was an altercation between neighbors that was a result of a conflict that had been going on for two and a half weeks.

The report indicated that Carpenter checked himself out of the hospital and said that he would not testify in court if charges were brought against Weaver.
