A candidate for Ashe County Sheriff is currently under investigation by the North Carolina SBI.

The Ashe Post and Times reports James ‘Jimmy’ Hendrix is currently the subject of an inquiry into whether or not he tampered with evidence in the Oct. 13, 2017, suicide death of Brittany Perkins.

Hendrix is the Ashe Memorial Hospital chief of police and a Republican candidate for Ashe County sheriff. He is currently on administrative leave with Ashe Memorial.

According to the report Perkins was reportedly the girlfriend of Shane Vannoy, who died a week before Perkins. Hendrix called Vannoy his “best friend.”

Hendrix maintains his innocence and says the investigation is politically motivated.

According to the report, Hendrix said the investigation should be focused on who released information from his formal interview with the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office about the incident. Hendrix claims that someone illegally released the interview online.

District Attorney Tom Horner of the 23rd Prosecutorial District has turned the investigation over to District Attorney Sarah Kirkman of District 22A.
