The Avery County Board of Education presented a proposal for major renovations for Avery High School at a joint meeting with the Avery Board of Commissioners on Monday.

The Avery Journal reports the project would take place in phases that would not interrupt the school’s normal schedule or restrict use of facilities.

The main part of the project is a new addition to the front of the building that would house classrooms and be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Fiber and sewer lines would have to be relocated, and temporary changes to the main entrance and parking areas during the main addition work.

After, the pod section would be demolished and the side parking lot reconfigured.

There is also potential to add new art and technical classrooms, a new auxiliary gym and auditorium in the future.

The estimated project cost is a bit more than $19,109,000 dollars. June 1st would be the deadline to begin design work, and the projected building completion date is in 2020.

According to the report, there will be a public hearing on the project at a future date.
