As previously reported, the Ashe County Board of Commissioners voted to pay the legal costs of three employees affected by the case of former Ashe Sheriff Terry Buchanan.

The Ashe Post and Times reports that paying their legal fees directly is prohibited by North Carolina General Statute. According to the report, Commissioners have voted to give raises to Commissioners Clerk Ann Clark, IT Director Cyrus Hurley and IT employee Todd Chapman in order to cover their legal fees.

The report indicates the raises will total $6,438 between the three during a 16 month period. All three employees were set to go up a pay grade in July, but the board voted to raise their pay immediately, and they will be raised second step July 1st
