Blue Ridge Parkway rangers have identified a man found dead Saturday on the parkway in Jackson County.

The Asheville Citizen Times reports parkway dispatch operators were notified by Jackson County Emergency officials that they had located a deceased male in the area near Waterrock Knob, which is about 70 miles southwest of Asheville. The man has been identified as Ralph Brady, age 55, of Bryson City.

According to the report, Parkway spokeswoman Leesa Brandon said Brady was dropped off Friday morning and was to be picked up Saturday morning. She said he was reported missing to Jackson County officials when he failed to meet the scheduled pick up in the area.

Brady was located by Jackson County rescuers approximately 30 yards from the parkway. Temperatures in the area that evening were approximately 17 degrees with high winds, which is believed to be a contributing factor in his death.

The incident remains under investigation.

Park officials remind visitors that good planning and proper equipment are essential for a safe trip, including letting someone know where you plan to hike or camp and when you plan to return, bringing a map, compass, GPS device, plenty of food and water, dressing appropriately for the weather and checking the weather conditions before heading out into the woods.
