Maintenance operations along the Blue Ridge Parkway mean temporary closures in several locations this winter. One of them is the Linn Cove Viaduct.

The Watauga Democrat reports the Viaduct will be closed March 1st through May 24th.

According to the report, the Viaduct closure will allow for surface repaving and bridge maintenance, and will include the trail below the bridge as well.

The work crews will remove and replace the asphalt pavement, waterproofing membrane and joints on the bridge, and conduct repairs to the supporting structure, stone curb, railing and drainage features.

A detour at milepost 298.6 at Holloway Mountain Road to milepost 305.1 will be in place during the closure. Gates will be located near Wilson Creek Overlook to the north of the area, and at Highway 221 on the south end.

This will be a full closure, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

According to the report, the area will be open again in time for Memorial Day weekend.
