The Avery County Sheriff's office along with Black Mountain Police, Buncombe County Sheriff's Department and the Department of Homeland Security recently conducted an operation that resulted in two arrests last Friday.

According to Avery Sheriff Kevin Frye, the operation resulted in the arrest of two heroin and methamphetamine traffickers in Buncombe County, and the seizure of 840 grams of methamphetamine - approximately 1.9 pounds), 114 grams of heroin and $12,000.

Augustine Manuel Vega, age 35, and James Mark Russell, age 58, both of Asheville, were each charged with multiple offenses including Trafficking in Heroin, Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession with the intent to Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver Psilocybin, Possession with the intent to Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver Marijuana, Felony possession of Marijuana and other charges.

Vega was placed under an $800,000 dollar secured bond. Russell was placed under an $825,000. Both men remain in custody.

Sheriff Frye said it was a text-book case of following drug transactions to reach high level traffickers, and not just the street dealers.
