New River State Park plans to conduct a prescribed burn at the park's Highway 221 Access Area.

The Ashe Post and Times reports the burn will take place sometime between now and February 24th but the actual day of the burn will depend on weather conditions.

According to the report, around 80 acres are to be burned by the NC Division of Parks and Recreation staff, NC Forest Service and local volunteer fire departments.

The burns will help reduce the chance of wildfires and will also benefit certain native plants and animals that depend on fire for maintaining top quality environmental conditions.
