The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Monday night through Tuesday morning.

An arctic cold front will move through the region and strong gusty winds will usher in much colder air and generate snow showers Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Accumulating snow will combine with the strong winds to make travel hazardous due to slick roads and reduced visibility in areas of blowing snow.

Total snow accumulations of up to 3 inches are expected. For areas including Avery and Mitchell counties and south, localized amounts could be as much as 5 inches.

Northwest winds will gust as high as 50 mph late tonight into Tuesday morning. The high winds and cold temperatures will produce wind chills as low as 0 to -5.

The hazardous travel conditions will continue through the morning commute Tuesday, before conditions gradually improve by later Tuesday afternoon.
